Jump Start

Jump Start helps at-risk youth perform better academically, acquire necessary work skills, improve self-esteem and prepare for life's challenges. It also leads them through work experience and private sector part-time employment. This successful program provides a positive alternative to high-risk, unsupervised time. In the process, it provides the life skills needed to avoid future welfare participation.

Jump Start is a collaborative effort offered by The Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida in partnership with local Workforce Boards. Local partners include organizations such as faith-based agencies, school systems, private sector employers, county contacts for mentoring initiatives, and post-secondary institutions.

Jump Start provides after-school and summer program activities including:

• Basic work skills based on SCANS employer demands
• Career perspectives
• Study skills
• Computer literacy
• Teamwork skills
• High School Competency Test preparation
• Critical thinking skills
• Tobacco use prevention
• Teen pregnancy prevention
